Farewell to John Guastaferro

John Guastaferro, Executive Director of the Anaheim Community Foundation since October 1, 2018, has announced his plans to pursue a new career opportunity. Beginning July 1, John will join Hyundai Motor America, where he will lead Hyundai Hope On Wheels and Genesis Inspiration Foundation, both with a history of impacting youth nationwide.

John was ACF’s first full-time paid employee.  Before his time as Executive Director, John was an ACF Board Member with a life and career deeply rooted in Anaheim.

During John’s time with ACF, he has led a period of tremendous growth for the organization, including:

  • securing ongoing financial support from a variety of community partners,
  • leading the Impact Anaheim annual giving day in collaboration with numerous Anaheim nonprofits;
  • building structure and financial processes to facilitate ACF’s long-term financial sustainability;
  • instituting ACF’s commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion;
  • chartering much-needed community research and hosting ACF’s very first annual Outcomes Forum to share research finding with the Anaheim community;
  • revitalized ACF’s annual Impact Report;
  • initiating various Action Planning Groups to facilitate cross-sector collaboration and change;
  • launching ACF’s Response & Recovery pandemic relief grant program, thanks to $4 million in city funding, to provide aid and support to Anaheim residents; and
  • engaging donors in making a triple impact by supporting ACF’s programs, mission, and future.

ACF will be conducting an executive director search over the next 12 weeks. In the meantime, past board chair Ed Munson will serve as interim Executive Director under the continued board leadership of Kim Chips. Over the next 12 weeks, ACF will conduct a search for ACF’s next executive director.

Honoring Chuck Malley

The Anaheim Community Foundation honors longtime ACF board member and partner, Chuck Malley, who passed away on February 6, 2022.

Chuck is a past ACF board member and Finance Chair, and he continued on to be our tax advisory professional for many years. He was passionate about helping people and was a generous donor over the years.

From the recent pandemic to ongoing social and mental health barriers, youth are facing greater challenges than ever before. YOU can help turn barriers into bridges by donating to ImpACT Anaheim, a giving day dedicated to helping underserved Anaheim youth and teens.

ACF Insights & Impact

On September 29, ACF hosted a virtual “Insights & Impact” event to share highlights from its community assessment efforts this past year. Thanks to our Event Sponsor, Disneyland Resort and Evaluation Sponsor, Samueli Foundation.

The event led with a video celebrating a year of community impact.

ACF Executive Director, John Guastaferro and ACF Board Chair, Kim Chips shared an overview of its community impact, and results of surveys with community organizations, clients/individuals, and stakeholder focus groups.

ACF also shared results from its Rapid Response & Recovery Grant Program. Thanks to $4 million from the City of Anaheim, ACF partnered with 76 nonprofit organizations to provide over 3.4 million meals, 22,000 support and consulting services, and numerous other vital services.

Beyond pandemic efforts, ACF shared data from its comprehensive assessment surveys with 100 community organizations and over 2,000 clients receiving services.

What are some of the key takeaways?  

  1. We learned that community-based organizations in Anaheim were incredibly nimble and agile in adapting their service models to meet the new challenges presented by the pandemic, to address what their clients needed the most at that point in time;
  2. We saw collaborations across sectors and organizations like we had never seen before in Anaheim—and it was highly effective.  In fact, one of the positive things that came out of this very trying time was finding a way for us all to work better together for the well-being of our community;
  3. Community-based organizations would not have been able to do all the good they were able to do during this timeframe without additional sources of funding, from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors;
  4. There is a real concern about what will happen when these additional sources of funding go away.  Organizations are worried that they may have to scale back the services they have been providing to their clients, despite the ongoing need.

What’s next?

Moving forward, it will be crucial that we ALL continue to collaborate – not in response to crisis – but in a proactive intentional way. To foster continued dialogue and cross-sector collaboration throughout Anaheim, ACF will be announcing Action Planning Groups in the coming months. ACF Partners with OCCF for “ImpACT Anaheim” Giving Day

24-Hour Fundraiser Seeks to Raise $90K for Nonprofits Providing Programs and Services for Underserved Youth and Teens

Anaheim, Calif. (July 15, 2021)The Anaheim Community Foundation will partner with the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) on July 28 for ImpACT Anaheim– a collaborative Giving Day to support underserved youth and teens in Anaheim. The 24-hour online effort aims to raise $90,000 for 10 nonprofits offering a range of programs in STEM education, arts, recreation, leadership development, and more.

Per a 2019 U.S. Census report, Orange County boasts more than 689,000 youth aged 17 and younger. Of that number, 84,000 live in Anaheim, equating to 24% of the City’s population.[1] This Giving Day is an opportunity for donors to collectively support the nonprofit organizations providing the tools and resources necessary for Orange County’s youth to receive vital support – especially during a time where their everyday way of life has been uprooted.  

In 2020, ACF spearheaded the efforts for ImpACT Anaheim Giving Day to raise $86,020 with the help of 393 donors, surpassing its collective goal of $75,000. ACF raised $19,835 for its Youth Program Scholarship Fund and Helping Hands grant program.

In addition to ACF, other participating organizations include Anaheim Ballet, Anaheim Family YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, Chance Theater, Girls Inc. of Orange County, Higher Ground Youth & Family Services, Love Anaheim, Pure Game, and Voice of Refugees.

“With the funds donated during the ImpACT Anaheim Giving Day, our up-and-coming youth will participate in essential programs they have lacked since the onset of the pandemic,” said Shelley Hoss, president and CEO of the Orange County Community Foundation. “We are proud to lead this collaborative initiative to help alleviate the barriers for underserved Anaheim youth and teenagers.”

Pandemic Relief

Since the rise of the pandemic in March 2020, the Anaheim Community Foundation has provided philanthropic outreach thanks to generous funding for $4 million from the City of Anaheim.

ACF launched a Rapid Response Grant program in April 2020, followed by several grant cycle focused on recovery and emerging needs. In total, ACF awarded grants to 76 nonprofit organizations working on the frontlines to help kids, families, seniors, and others struggling amid the pandemic. ACF also supported the work of Anaheim’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) through our ACF Community Emergency Assistance Fund.

Together, we have provided over 1.2 million meals, over 93,000 food and grocery boxes, and numerous other supplies and resources to people of every age and background. Our focus has been on initial response for the most critical needs, followed by expanded services to address emerging needs.

The Anaheim Hive

The Anaheim Community Foundation, in partnership with the Samueli Foundation, is helping to build the capacity of nonprofits serving Anaheim. In the summer of 2019, “The Hive: Where Nonprofits Thrive” will be a shared space for community-based organizations to utilize for workstations, offices, conference rooms, meeting space for staff trainings, and many other amenities.
